Hello Webdanger,
G00gle ways are often mysterious even for experienced people, I’m not a pro with SEO, but I’ll tell you my opinion and point some resources where you can research more about your problem.
I don’t think you’re banned, as far as I know being banned means that all your site pages are removed from google index. While it’s common for a new site to bounce from a page to another, or disappear completely for a keyword or more and then appearing again, it’s kind of weird and frustrating to see your old, well establish website, vanishing from g00gle for most of the keywords.
In most of the cases they have nothing to worry about, it can happen when g00gle perform updates etc but their sites will be back on the same positions or at least close ones, usually in few days .
I’ve been in this situation as well, one day one of my best sites has vanished from G for my best keywords, I did panic a bit being first time but after researching for a while I’ve found out that I was not the only one with the same problem, there were hundreds of webmasters on the forums having the same situation as me. Some were affected, some not… and I decided to wait for things to settle by itself and so it happened, my site was back in the game as before (even better) in 2-3 days.
I can’t be sure what’s happening with your website but it’s not banned, the fact that G it’s playing with it, may be due to many reasons (if it’s a new site.. it’s kind of normal to play with it like this) if not.. you have several things to check out in an effort to find out what is going on. I don’t know too much about penalties, but I do know that G can and will penalize things like: keyword stuffing, cross linking your sites having same or similar ip address, duplicate content, hidden text, linking to or receiving links from sites that were banned or penalized by G might also affect your site, having tons of external links on index and just a bit of good content etc etc etc. The number of sites that are linking to you it’s irrelevant, more important it’s the quality of those sites. If someone has copied your site (design, content etc) you will be affected as well, and if you found someone doing it you should report it to g00gle and his hosting company.
Without details about your site name, age, for how long has been in this situation etc.. might be hard for someone to know what’s wrong with it.
Anyhow if I were you, I would try to find if there is something I’m doing wrong, I would permanently try to improve my site by constantly adding fresh and unique content, finding quality links partners, fixing xhtml errors if exists.. doing small changes from time to time (not often) for testing purposes and so on.. Everything should be made with common sense and with the visitor in mind. From my experience most of the things related to
big search engines are common sense, also it’s kind of easy to figure out most of the things just by looking at g00gle search results. If one it’s playing tricks and permanently looking for shortcuts in relation with search engines, it might work for a while, but sooner or later SE will figure it out and the “favor” it’s returned.
