WebDesign Resources

Postby Ioana on Thu Jan 15, 2009 11:30 pm

I found some interesting stuff on photoshop and also on webdesign generally, I list some of them here , I would really love to share experience with others, especially beacause all I know in webdesign comes from what I discovered by myself. I hope the other webmasters here break the ice and take the time to share ,because this is of a great help for all of us.
Here are some cool sites:

Hi Ioana,

Personally when it comes to design, first I imagine how the site it should look, after I have a draft of it, I start to search after various elements like pictures, brushes, patterns, shapes etc. I play with the elements (in Photoshop): cutting, mixing, effects, multiplying etc till something nice it’s ready, then I slice, optimize and save as jpg, gif, png depending on what I need. I use Notepad2 and Dreamweaver to build html&css template for the design, then it’s all about the content.

I use http://www.brusheezy.com and http://www.deviantart.com for free brushes, patterns, shapes and inspiration.

I like to build my own designs but sometimes when there is no time for creation I search for free or paid templates that I can use as it is or modifying it for my needs. There are many templates sources out there and easy to find. I can point here to: http://www.oswd.org for simple site templates and here: http://www.wordpresstemplates.com or http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/ for blog templates.

More impressions on webdesign resources are appreciated.

Cheers, Johnny

Hi,
Well, I just built small websites, like 5 pages or so , but now I am building a website for acwm and I want it really big, I mean like 40 pages or so , i plan to make a page for every category in cleo-video and also I want links to the live show on every page, etc.
Me too , I love creating my own thing, but as you can see in my pages, I found inspiration elsewhere too, because otherwise I wouldn't know about glossy effects and everything. For acwm , I built single pages and the entrance link goes directly to xlovecam :)
For the SEO part...well :) I used a few keywords a lot in my site and also I used a css trick that I found out it is at the limit, but acceptable: http://www.yoursiteisvalid.com/validnews/advanced-image-replacement-40.html and I plan to buy more domains as I think its better than paying referencemments.
I check my pages in linx to see the amount of the keywords etc.
I use dreamweaver , photoshop and fireworks ( I use the last one only for slicing the photoshop layouts)
I also would love to use more often quanta plus as I love linux more, but I got so used to dreamweaver , i think im addicted :)
and i can't use wine to install dreamweaver in linux as it works only with the earliest versions of dreamweaver which i never find :)
so if u go to some of my pages ,they look clean and have only a few words, but if u watch the source code you will be amazed of how many times I repeated the keywords :)

There are links to my other pages in the website above.
Right now I am working at a website for a friend who needs a form2mail....
And this is scary:)
I know nothing about CGI and from what I've seen it's scary :)
I hope I'll manage somehow :)

Hello Ioana,

It’s a good start in terms of visual design, anyhow related to content of html source I would definitively recommend to rely more on trusted seo techniques and to avoid playing tricks with search engines…in time all these tricks (keyword spam, hidden text etc) will work against you (your site).

Currently you have more keywords than text content; it doesn’t look good at all. Consider reducing a lot the number of keywords, also keep in mind that keywords must be relevant to page content. It’s useless (and it’s considered as spam) to have keywords that can’t be found anywhere in your content.

Just my opinion, you should focus more on content – add more text, relevant links (placing a link on a common word like “ici” will not help in relation with SEO), add live cams, add more pages, don’t HIDE your content (g00gle and others can see this – and if not – someone might report your site sooner or later). Search for relevant link partners to build more external links to your site (www.thunder-ball.net, www.protect-x.com are good places to start building links)

There are many other things to say, but most important is to understand that playing tricks with search engines will only make things worse. Build your sites with the visitor in mind, write quality text content, build links, respect the basic advices about seo (that you can find all over the web) – this should be the right path to follow.
Some seo resources that I can point: www.seochat.com , www.seobook.com

Also take a look at these articles about things to avoid when performing seo:
http://www.sonicseo.com/six-things-to-avoid.html
http://searchengineland.com/seo-donts-2 ... ceed-11533

Good luck with your work.

Best regards, Johnny

Thank you, I guess I have a lot of work ot do :)
You are right . I never find straight things on seo, I mean somehow SEO was the part that scared me the most. And I didn't know who to trust and what to do. I thought I would find things on SEO only for sale, not for free,so whenever I read something on this subject I didn't know if it was reliable or not.
As you can see on that link about the css trick they say it is valid, and I trusted that, so ...thank you very much for the advice, I will change all my sites. And it makes sense ,the part with the content percent versus the keywords.
I will add more pages too.
I love webdesign, I just didn't have an organised method :)
I have lots of things to read and to put in practice. :geek:
